For the third installment of our mini 'Getting to Know You' blog series, I'm going to be telling you all about myself! My name is Emily Gray and I'm the one who writes all these blogs for our website. Other than that, I'm just a normal member of StageCrafts. I've been a member since we began all the way back in 2013 and I am so grateful to be a part of such a fun group of people. But enough about that, here's a little more about my life in theatre...
How long have you been involved in theatre?
I've been performing quite literally as long as I can remember. My brother and friends and I used to put plays on for my parents with our toys and scenery we made out of cardboard. My first major role outside of the living room wasn't until year 4 though when I got cast as the main part in the school's Christmas play, The Little Fir Tree. I broke my ankle a couple of weeks before the performance but thankfully the main part in The Little Fir Tree is a little fir tree so I simply had to stand in one spot for the whole play. The only time I had to move was to go off stage was for the interval. I've been singing and acting ever since.
What is your favourite show?
There are so many amazing shows out there that I can't simply choose one! My joint favourite shows would have to be Into the Woods and Hamilton. I love 'clever' music. Listening to complex harmonies and intertwining melodies just makes me so excited! I was lucky enough to go and see Into the Woods at the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre in January last year and it was absolutely incredible! One of the best birthday presents I've ever received! I was lucky again this year and have been able to buy tickets to see Hamilton when it comes to London this year. We're not going till March 2018 but I honestly could not even begin to describe how excited I am for that!.
Is there a character who you would really love to play given the opportunity?
I have a couple of characters in mind that would be really cool to be able to play if I ever got the chance. Either The Witch or The Baker's Wife from Into the Woods would be incredible for me obviously, it being one of my favourite shows. I'd also just love to be in Hamilton but there are only three female actresses in that so chances are slim. Another character which I admit is perhaps an unusual one, is Madam Giry from Love Never Dies, the sequel to Phantom of the Opera. I'm not fussed about Madam Giry in Phantom but I like her a lot in Love Never Dies. Any character that gets some nice harmonies would work for me though really. I love getting to sing beautiful harmonies
Do you think being involved in theatre has helped you in life?
Oh, absolutely! Maybe I've always been a confident person but I think its mostly down to being involved in theatre. On a very practical level I think it's helped me be a good public speaker and I'm not afraid to give presentations in class or at work. Theatre also helped me find my group of friends at school and helped me figure out who I want to be. I'd definitely recommend joining a theatre group to any young child. Even if they don't go on to do theatre all their life, it'll bring them out of their shells and instill a confidence that'll stay with them for life.

What has been your best experience in theatre so far?
It might sound cheesy but I think being a part of StageCrafts is a fantastic experience. The fact that we've managed to set this up ourselves is amazing and I am proud of every single performance we do. From an audience perspective though, I recently went to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime which was just superb! Such a clever performance! I was so impressed with how in sync the chorus cast was and how they managed to create scenes from just their physical performance. There's a little bit where they're on a train and, to create that scene, all the actors swayed in exactly the same way at exactly the same time to indicate a little bumps in the tracks. It sounds so silly for such a small thing to make me go wow but it really did.
Are you going to see a show anytime soon? If so, what?
Actually the next show I have officially lined up is Hamilton next year. I'm sure I'll see something else in the meantime, I just don't tend to book ahead that much.
So there you are! That's me! Don't forget to check back in a couple of weeks to learn more about another one of our members. In the meantime, you can still read about Josh, our company director, and Jasmine, if you missed their posts.
